trede: Concerns re: comics, flash, etc
Hi everyone. Just thought I should let everyone read this email from Mr. Edwards:Dear Thomas
I was concerned to find a partial comic strip adaptation of my novel
Dragoncharm on your 'Loving Dragoncharm' website, here:
I must remind you that no adaptations of my copyrighted work may be
published in any form, whether for profit or otherwise, without the express
permission of myself and HarperCollins. This includes, but is not restricted
to, comic strips, screenplays, Flash animation and written fiction.
I appreciate the comic strip in question has come from the fan community. I
therefore appreciate the spirit in which it has been created. Nevertheless,
copyright law applies. I trust you will remove these pages immediately.

I think that we should request that we be allowed to do this work before continuing--take it down in the meantime. I mean this for both your comic and the Flash I wish to do.
It is entirely possible that he'll let us, but we need to ask.

Mew. That is sad. *noses* But I hope as Draco18s suggest, that he would maybe approve it if one asked for permission. *is happy she managed to save it for herself* I have seen many other fan art and even fan fiction of authors work, and never before I have seen that the author has requested that removed from fan pages.

I know Anne McCaffery has a strict reign on her copyright. I've forgotten quite how stict, but I think that she does not allow fan fiction or RP MU*s or her world to exist. Graham Edwards is actually allowing quite a lot here already. Which is why I believe that he would let up do a comic strip (we still need Harper Collins to allow it). A Flash movie might be different....The movie rights ARE available for DC, but I don't know anything about what haivng them would entitle.

Actually I already previous thought about if he would allow a comic with actual text be on this site considering that there was already a excerpt of the book here. Unfortunately after checking the copyrights, excerpts are a exception but not everything else. An alternate idea was to make comics that used fan-fiction but since that's not allowed as well... Well at least everything was non-profit and personally I think such fan-activities spread the popularity of the books. I have reason to believe that Graham Edwards checking up on these threads, so, Mr.Edwards if you are reading this, can you please grant us fans the permission to do fan-comics, fictions and flash animations. Since actual text and story from the novels are out of the question then how about fan-fiction?

While he is probably reading these, he could give us his permission, but we'd still need that of the publisher (Harper Collins).
As for Harper Collins (my books say Voyager on them, but I don't know if that is owned by HC or HC was the UK release) I think we should try and show them that there is significant interest in these books and to get a second publishing of them.

Actually Voyager imprinted the HC copy. HC is the publisher.

*nods and noses* I do not know about Anne McCaffery's handling about copyrights, but then I have not kept to books that has large publicity. And the fan communities about those has existed in peace with both art and fan stories. Like Barbara Hambly, but then, she is a fan fiction arthour herself, kind of. She wrote StarWars stories up til she started constructing her own world.
